Learning, experiencing and greening Thailand – students from Wad Hualampong School fighting climate change!

Location: Phra Padaeng, Thailand
Date: 4th July 2015
No. of trees planted: 120 Trees

PATT had a busy Saturday on the 4th of July. Forest in Phra Padaeng in Bangkok got a special visit – 50 brave kids and 10 dedicated teachers from Thai Wad Hualampong School. They were determined to regreen the Lungs of Bangkok to provide cleaner air and water for the big city. In order to be able to do this, the school received a generous support from the Thaiyarnyon Automobile Group.

Before planting could take place, students had to learn more about the area. Representative from the local community explained to them how community forests help reduce poverty and at the same time protect biodiversity. To store in memory all the information, kids solved a “word search” puzzle. But in order to really understand the topic, they were taken on a forest trail. During this learning experience they met termites, snake skin, fire ants, and all kinds of trees that are important for wildlife as well as for the local community. These trees provide wood, medicine and food, and are so indispensable in the lives of local inhabitants.

But trees’ benefits do not end there – they also provide shelter or home, help to clean air and water, and store carbon out of the atmosphere thus reducing the temperature of Bangkok. Now it was really time to start with planting. But first the kids starter with potting the seedlings of the black mangrove. Some of them were a bit cautious and treated the seedlings with all the care, while others really didn’t mind getting dirty with the soil.

Also the mud during the tree planting didn’t stop anyone. Some of the kids even discovered that you can make interesting mud figures out of it. Planting was definitely challenging as kids needed to cross a few bamboo and palm tree bridges before arriving to the planting site – and one or two did step into the muddy waters while trying to cross. But at the end everyone was extremely proud of their good green work for our nature.

A new little forest is now growing in Phra Padaeng. At PATT Foundation we really couldn’t be prouder of the students from Wad Hualampong. Also a really huge thank you to the company that made all this possible – Thaiyarnyon Automobile Group. It is always amazing to see during the tree planting how people come together and no matter the differences help each other towards a bigger goal – saving our planet!
