Frequently Asked Questions
PATT Foundation is constantly urging everyone interested in environmental issues to TAKE ACTION. However, these should be informed actions. If you would like a bit more information about who we are, what we do and how we do it, please read our Frequently Asked Questions below. If these don't tell you what you want to know, feel free to Contact Us.
PATT Foundation is a Registered UK Charity and a registered Thai foundation. We work primarily within Asia, to campaign for better environmental practices, take action against climate change by planting trees, set up school tree nurseries, provide environmental education, and fund community development projects in rural communities centered on tree planting and reforestation.
Yes. PATT Foundation is a registered United Kingdom Charity (No: 1117158) and a registered Thai Foundation (No. กท 1733).
PATT Foundation is currently implementing tree planting projects in Thailand, India, Indonesia and South Africa. We hope to expand our scope in the near future.
Trees have been shown to assist with the removal of carbon dioxide (a key greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere and store it in the trunk, leaves, roots and soil. Furthermore the addition of tree to a degraded landscape also helps to reduce soil erosion, helps with water conservation, increases biodiversity and provides habitat for wildlife. Planting projects also provide livelihoods for communities in developing countries.
PATT projects aim to have multiple benefits, such as increasing biodiversity, creating jobs, alleviating poverty, removing carbon, preventing soil erosion.
- PATT is a non-profit organisation so more money goes towards the project than would through planting projects with a 'for-profit' organisation.
- PATT is experienced at implementing large and small reforestation projects.
- PATT personally manages all its projects and has its own staff on the ground working with local people to achieve the stated project aims.
- PATT's projects have been internationally recognised by the United Nations SEED award panel.
- PATT has complete transparency with all its transactions, all tree and carbon offsets are credited to their purchaser and logged on our tree map. We ensure no 'double selling' is undertaken.
- PATT projects are implemented in secure locations, either legally owned or protected under a national law such as national park status.
Our carbon offset calculations are based on a 40-year sequestration period. In reality, the tree will continue removing CO2 after this period, but at a declining rate. Our calculations take into account the carbon sequestration from the more reliable 40 year period.
Planting is only one stage in the process of forest restoration to ensure your tree survives to maturity we have a comprehensive monitoring and maintenance schedule in place for all our projects. For 3 years post-planting we will weed, fertilise and monitor the site every 3-6 months. In addition to this, fire breaks are established during the dry season to decrease the risk posed by forest fires. During periods of unexpected drought the sites will be manually watered to minimise losses. Any trees that do not survive are replanted during the regular monitoring and site maintenance. After 3 years the trees are typically established and the shade they are producing will significantly help to suppress weed growth. At this point sites are monitored on an annual basis.
Yes, any donations for trees will result in the exact number of trees purchased being planted at one of our reforestation sites. Because the ideal conditions for tree planting are seasonal (during the wet season), your tree may not get planted until conditions are appropriate. All trees are recorded on our tree map.
If you want to donate to have one or several trees planted in our reforestation projects you can do so online here. If you want to purchase tree to offset carbon dioxide then you can do so here.

The use of the donation depends on the type of donation you make. For tree donations, trees will be planted in one of our tree planting projects in Thailand. We have two main project types where trees are either donated for reforestation purposes or for carbon offset purposes. Trees will be allocated to whatever project type you have selected. We aim to ensure no more than 20% of donations for trees go towards administrative costs.
Non-tree donations made to the Foundation will be used to help with the everyday administration costs that our foundation incurs. Although not as glamorous as planting a beautiful tropical tree, donations to cover our running costs are just as essential in order to keep doing the work it takes to bring these projects to life. We endeavor to keep our running costs to a minimum partly by sharing office space, using lower cost online marketing techniques, and partnering with quality, like-minded organisations rather than "reinventing the wheel".
PATT has developed a carbon offset programme called Carbon Free. This is based around the Voluntary Carbon Offset market. We have a number of options for carbon offsets, each with additional environmental and social benefits on top of the actual sequestration of carbon. Click here for more.
We are always more than happy to assist a company with a genuine desire to implement green initiatives within their company. There are a variety of ways in which we can assist you with your CSR, ranging from sourcing one-off projects in your geographical location, designing projects for your company, or helping you determine your company's carbon footprint. Our carbon offsets have been determined using a number of reliable sources and methodology, most notably the IPCC (intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), CO2fix and the Asian institute of technology. Our carbon offset projects also incorporate methodology and recommendations from The Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) and the Voluntary Carbon Standard. Further detail on our calculations can be found here.
The number of trees needed to remove 1 tonne of CO2 varies depending on the species planted and where the trees are planted. Our carbon offset projects are located in monsoonal, high rainfall, tropical locations in Thailand. The independently verified sequestration rates for the trees we plant range from 500kg to 800 kg of CO2 removed per tree.
PATT is a charity registered with the Charities Commission of England and Wales. If you are a UK taxpayer or a UK company, you are eligible for tax relief on donations. Please inform us when making a donation that you are a UK taxpayer. Most countries have legislation which allows charitable investments at certain levels to be offset against taxation. We recommend that you seek professional advice when making a charitable contribution as to your individual or corporate tax position.
If you are interested in assisting the PATT Foundation on a voluntary basis, please contact us as we are happy to have assistance from like-minded individuals across the globe, who want to put something back into the earth that has given us so much and leave a positive legacy for our future generations. PATT Foundation also runs many events throughout the year which we invite the public to attend and participate in. Some of these events are tree planting days, fairs, and other environmental excursions.
See our EVENT CALENDAR for further details.
PATT works with experienced and reputable local organisations to develop suitable, sustainable projects based on principles of conservation. Our projects always engage local people as key stakeholders and incorporate their interests at all times. All our projects are undertaken on land with some form of formal protection and are aimed at regenerating degraded land back to a biologically diverse forest ecosystem.
